After all the hard work i think it all paid off in the end, lots of sleepless nights in which a sewing machine and glue gun became my new best friends is finally over.

The day of the shoot was so stressful and took allot of hard work transporting all the props, I had to hire a huge van..and then attempt to drive it to Bournemouth gardens which was interesting! As well as being a long day it was really gratifying seeing all my sets take shape as up until then it had all been planned out on paper. The day was a success and the final images will be up soon!

Mulberry Fashion Week...

So last week was London Fashion Week and I got the chance to be an intern at Mulberry for the weekend, helping out with the show and after party! This was such a privilege and an overall amazing experience.

Mulberry is famous for its extravagantly themed shows featuring creative props and set design and this season was no different. Inspired by Roald Dahl's 'Fantastic Mr.Fox' and ethereal Turner landscapes, Claridge's was decked out with winter trees and hedgerows covered in wildlife. From toadstools seats to an abandoned Mulberry shed, which turned into a photo-booth in the evening...the whole venue came to life!

For my final major project I really want to focus on creating a set and props for a photographic shoot. With this project I plan to make elaborate props in order to produce an interesting and eccentric scene. When thinking of inspiration for the theme of my shoots I spent ages researching old children's stories and fairy tales as I think I would be able to have the most fun with these and they have the possibility to go OTT on the props and set. After shortlisting possible stories, I kept coming back to Lewis Carroll's 'Alice in Wonderland' although being a very well known and maybe 'common' story i think it has the biggest storyline to play with. To me this is the ultimate imaginative and magical story, where everything is not as it seems. I love the idea of creating a dreamlike/warped scene and it gives me the perfect opportunity to play with proportions as that is a major part of the story line. Whilst using 'Alice in Wonderland' as inspiration and a starting point, I don't want to fall down the stereotypical route where everything is too predicable. I have ideas of taking advantage of Lewis Carroll's crazy rhymes and riddles and basing each shoot around them.

Shona Heath...

I think Shona Heath has been my biggest inspiration over the last year. After getting more and more interested in prop styling and set design, it became apparent that the majority of shoots and sets that I am drawn to are created by Shona. She has such a unique stylized way of creating eye-catching dramatic scenes, her use of props and hand made materials are exquisite!

Flower armor

This was a collaborative project where the photographers concept was to portray women as flowers. Women can look delicate like a wilting flower but are still strong and empowering represented by joining flowers and body armor. I started making pieces such as a helmet, collar, shield and shoulder pads. These were all made using a mixture of painted artificial flowers and hand made paper flowers; which I then arranged into oasis of the armor.

After creating giant, oversized sweets for my 'Negotiated Practice' unit, I carried on making props that played on proportions and created nostalgic objects. Here I started making massive cupcakes on a tea cake stand, with the idea of ultimately creating an oversized tea party!

I made massive paper cupcake cases and then filled them with expanding plumbing foam...note to anyone ever using expanding foam...dont get it on your hands! I spent the next 2 days trying to file it off!

For my 'Negotiated practice' I wanted to take a traditional children's story and recreate it using oversized props and by creating a set on location. I chose to capture the shoot in the new forest as it would create an interesting juxtaposition between the giant paper backdrops and the forest background. As the gingerbread house is the main component of the story I wanted to produce over sized sweets such as giant candy canes and lollipops. I worked closely with a photographer and the final shoot was very successful.

Mulberry Fashion Week 2010...

Im back-tracking to Sept 2010 now, where I had the amazing opportunity of working at Fashion Week for Mulberry!

We set up at Clariges in London and the madness began…models, clothing photographers all in chaotic organization. The show was inspired by the iconic story 'The Secret Gargen' and the 1975 film 'Grey Gardens'. The catwalk had a floral theme using dozens of giant neon roses, alongside life-size paper dolls illustrated by Natasha Law. Later that evening I sat organizing the gifts that would later be presented to the guests at the Mulberry dinner, ‘The Lost Explorer’ created by Tim Walker. This was such a great experience and ultimately changed my direction of practice, as i am now leaning from illustration towards prop styling and set design.

Sooo...a new year a new blog!
Something ive been meaning to start for quite a while now, but i keep procrastinating.
Just going to use this as a way of documenting my work and progress...ill try not to ramble on too much.
Here it goes...
